Europeans U19 Report

This year our Under 19 team headed to Prague for the European Team Championships. Our team consisted of Madeleine Hylland, Elias Ratejczak, Nicolai Bø and Andreas Knoph. This was a very young squad with three of the four players being available for the Under 19’s next year. All the players were excited to compete and wear their Norwegian shirt with pride.

We started our campaign on Thursday morning against Denmark. Although Denmark were seeded lower they were an extremely strong side. The match was on the glass court, a fantastic location in the middle of the park. Both Nicolai and Elias struggled to get used to the glass court and the bright sunlight glaring onto the court. Elias lost his first match 3-0 but the game scores were very close. Madeleine didn’t start well and went 2-0 down and 9-4 down. She found some mental toughness and fighting spirit and clawed her way all the way back to win 3-2. All the pressure was on Nicolai but despite battling hard he lost out 3-0. Not the start we wanted but we remained positive with plenty more squash to play.

In the afternoon we played a strong Polish team, a new match and fresh mindset. Elias played fantastic squash and only lost narrowly in 4 games. Madeleine played out of her skin against Karina Tyma the recently crowned Under 19 Individual champion. Madeleine took the first game and gave a solid account in the next three to just lose 3-1. Nicolai came out storming and tore his opponent apart 3-0 with some clever squash.

The following day we had […]

Senior European Team Championships 2019 Report

Last week the Norwegian women’s and men’s teams travelled to Lisbon to take part in the
European Team Championships. All the players were extremely motivated and the team
spirit was very high.

The women were ready to continue their success from last season, this year they were
missing Lotte Eriksen but this wasn’t going to stop them. They dominated the Pool beating
the Isle of Man 3-0 and Luxembourg 3-0. In the quarter final we played Croatia, Chloe
played excellent squash to win 3-0 followed by Madeleine who sealed the deal also
winning 3-0.

The semi final was going to be a tough match against Russia who had a strong team and
many fans! Again Chloe took to the court first against a young Russian girl. The Russian
came out all guns firing and went 2-0 up. Chloe started to get into the game and only
narrowly lost the last game 12-10 after a fantastic fight. Madeleine then was facing a
difficult player at number one string. The match was so close and despite going 2-1 up the
Russian upped her game and Madeleine couldn’t quite close out the match. It was an
incredible effort from Madeleine and the country should be proud of their performances.

The bronze medal match took place on Saturday against the hosts Portugal. Melanie was
fired up and destroyed her opponent 3-0. Madeleine took to the court and despite losing
the 2nd game she went on to win 3-1 and secure the women a bronze medal! Well done to
Madeleine, Melanie, Chloe and Karoline for all the hard work they have put into their
training, it certainly showed in their performances.

The men also started off strong finishing top […]
